Review #310: The Girl Who Collected Butterflies (Haunted Minds #3) by John Hennessy

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“I will hurt you for this. I don't know how yet, but give me time. A day will come when you think yourself safe and happy, and suddenly your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth, and you'll know the debt is paid.”

----George R.R. Martin

John Hennessy, the British paranormal YA author, pens his third book in the Haunted Minds series, The Girl Who Collected Butterflies, and this time the ghost/witch of the house on 110 Normandy Road is back with vengeance, and she will not rest until she succeeds in punishing the evil souls.

Review #281: Clara's Song (Haunted Minds, #2) by John Hennessy

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.”

----Friedrich Nietzsche

John Hennessy (my friend), an English writer, pens a bone-chilling as well as inspiring and quite thrilling tale about marriage, Clara's Song that is the second book in the Haunted Minds series. Now as the title of the series says, Haunted Minds, the book in the series actually keeps haunting our minds not only while reading but also long after we have finished reading the book.

Review #228: The Ghost of Normandy Road (Haunted Minds #1) by John Hennessy

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“The sweetest smiles hold the darkest secrets...”

----Sara Shepard, an American author

John Hennessy, an English author, pens his ninth book, The Ghost of Normandy which is the first book in the Haunted Minds series and just like the series name, this book completely haunted my mind with it's sweet yet scary myths-turning-into-real story. This book is inspired from real-life incidents, so behold your minds into being dismissive about it. The book is centered around three myths- the Tooth Fairy with Blood Red Wings, the Witch of Hill Top Road and the Ghost of Normandy Road.

Review #145: Innocent While Sleeps(A Tale of Vampires, #3) by John Hennessy

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Death is the one predator we can't escape. But vampires have found the loophole so many of us crave. I think that's the allure of vampirism.
----Sherrilyn Kenyon a bestselling US writer

John Hennessy, an English YA writer, has done it again with his new novella Innocent While She Sleeps in the A Tale of Vampires series. He has once again made it equally provoking, wicked and alluring, enchanting at the same time. There are few authors on the block who can turn a blood-lusting vampire into an innocent being, reading about which can only fill up your heart with compassion, instead of hatred!

Synopsis:
Tormented by all the wicked and evil deeds she has committed in her life, the vampire has never known what it is like to truly rest in peace. Far from the confines of the Blood and the Raven; at Castle Dreymuir, a most unlikely source offers her a way out of the life.

Initially, she dismisses it out of hand; stating the cost is far too high for her to possibly consider. But as time goes on, one overwhelming desire eats away at her - a return to innocence in both her waking hours and whilst she sleeps.

Will she accept this deadly but most compelling of offers, so that she can put her brutal existence to rest, once and for all?

Guest Post by John Hennessy + Cover Reveal

A Writer's Confession by John Hennessy

In 2009, I was made redundant from my job of ten years. Far from being the end, it was the beginning of something - something big, interesting, and would become the most important thing to me at this time in my life.

I started my writing journey.

It began in the real world. My first title would be a non-fiction book, as I had to write about what I felt I was an authority on.

Two years later, this book materialised as The Essence of Martial Arts.

It's been a great aid to my students, and I learned a lot about the writing process as I went through it.

It was more work, more headache inducing than I thought. But it was also very rewarding.

When it was completed, students wanted the follow up. But I wanted a break from it.

Almost immediately, at the end of 2011, I began to write Stormling. This book went through so many re-drafts, it did not emerge until 2014, nearly three whole years! This should put paid to some voices of opinion, that feel self-published authors just want to get any old rubbish out there as fast as they can!

I am not the best writer out there, far from it. But as my first editor said, 'writing is a craft'. Trite words? Possibly. But at the time, I needed to hear them. And I still do!

Although 'Stormling' was the story I completed, it was just a draft, and needed a lot of work.

Needing a break from 'fantasy', I had an idea for a story about a girl who was given an item of some major significance. The backdrop was to be a scary forest, and denizens of the undead were to come and claim it from her - and possibly her life, if she resisted.

Easy story in concept, but was hard to write in actuality.

That said, given the valuable practice gained on Stormling, the writing process itself became easier.

It was probably safe to say I had become addicted to writing at this point!

I felt I had 'something', and so I sought the self-publishing route, as Amanda Hocking had done so well via the method.

I didn't expect to replicate her success, but just write the very best story I could. I did, however, seek a good cover for my books, and I chose Amanda's artist for the Dark Winter and Stormling covers.

I've completed six books to date, five fiction titles amongst them, but I retain my fascination as a reader, and I will read pretty much anything.

I cannot thank readers, bloggers, reviewers enough for their kind support thus far. I take something from each review, and the best kind are those that offer critique that is hard, but fair.

In the end, the writer does the best they can. I hope if you give one of my books a try, you'll enjoy them.

I think my main interest as a writer is horror. For this, I would recommend my Tale of Vampires series, the third novella of which will be out in May 2015.

The Dark Winter trilogy, which completes in Autumn 2015, could fall under paranormal fantasy for YA. It has some strong horror elements perhaps not suitable for the youngest of readers.

Last but not least, Stormling is a fantasy in the mold of Lord of the Rings - but it is a lot different from that Middle-earth world!

I would like to thank the blog host Aditi Saha for inviting me to talk about my book journey.

I hope to see you along for the ride.

Review, Interview and a Can't-Give-It-a-Miss Giveaway of The Blood and The Raven by John Hennessy

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.
----Howard Phillips Lovecraft —known, an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction

John Hennessy, an English YA novelist, captivated our minds with his latest novella, The Blood and the Raven that features fear like never before. From the name itself, the book gives us a vibe that it's nothing about all those sweet vampire love story, instead it will be a sick story and the fear of which will absolutely overpower our minds.

Synopsis:
A group of teenagers spend a night amongst the ruins of an old priory, taking turns to scare one other with a tale of horror, each one more scary than the last.

When it comes to Seth, the last storyteller, he is reluctant to tell the story, because once the tale has been told, those who hear it, will begin to die.

His friends think Seth is bluffing - but is he in fact, telling the truth?

Let's Take a Look Back- Best Books of 2014 with Some Best Moments!

So it's again that time of year when the time forces us to look back over our shoulder and makes us think about it. But I'm not here to reminiscence about my past or about how I spent this year, instead, I'd like to summarize- summarize things I liked, things I achieved and things I lost and based on that I can resolute for a better new year.
Sounds too emo, isn't it?!! Don't worry,  I'll list out Top 10 books I read this year, along with 10 best things happened to me this year! Now that sounds reasonable! So without wasting a second, let's get down to listing!

10 Best Books That I Read in 2014 + 10 Best Things Happened to Me in 2014

1. The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri:

Jhumpa Lahiri took us on two brother's journey from Kolkata to Rhode Island with her heart-touching story that shows us an unbreakable brotherly bond filled with Naxalite movement, loss, death and love. Most critics and review critically reviewed this book, but this book impacted me a lot and made to look at relationships with a better perspective. Marrying your brother's widow is still considered a sin in our religion, but Lahiri portrayed that sin with ease and perfection thus giving birth to one of the most heart-breaking love stories.

And my year started with (always starts with!) a visit to my pilgrimage- Kolkata International Book Fair 2014. And the fair always end up with a handful of books. And secretly, I always curse myself for spending way out of my budget. The Lowland was definitely one of them! So year begins always on a happy note or rather say with room full of books :-P

2. And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini

Finally brought this book from an online book store and I was waiting for quite a long time for it's price to come down or for some kind of discount, (PS: I'm not a miser, it's called saving money so that I can buy other books!) Hosseini, being my favorite author, I waited for a year to read his novel. But honestly, I felt like I did the good thing since even after reading And the Mountains Echoed, A Thousand Splendid Suns will always remain my all time favorite Khaled Hosseini book. And just like Lahiri, Hosseini too explored the depths of a brother-sister relationship across the enchanted lands of Afghanistan.

And I got a new job in a new company with a new role along with more responsibilities and with a great set of seniors and work-mates. So it is another thankful event happened to me in 2014.

3. Cell by Robin Cook

2014 presented me with another of my all time favorite author's new novel, Cell, which explored the mobile app technology to cure one's illness or even disease, which ultimately changes the face of modern day medical practices followed by some suspicious deaths. Cook's new medical thriller once again charmed my mind and arrested by soul with his adrenaline-rushing style story-telling.

My first footstep taken on being a reviewer and this was the period when I started getting 3-4 review requests in a month and eventually, my confidence began building up.

4. Elixir by Ted Galdi

Got an opportunity to read Galdi's debut book, Elixir, which gives us hope as Galdi breakthroughs the cure of the most deadly disease of 2014- Ebola with his intriguing YA thriller. Galdi's thrilling narrative style kept me glued till the book's very end and being a debut writer, Galdi outruns the talent of many popular and world famous writers.

An incredible book website, named, TripFiction featured me on their monthly newsletter and that was one of the proudest moment of my life.

5. Dark Winter series by John Hennessy

John Hennessy's debut horror series made me an instant fan of his creepy narrative style. Moreover, I was mot a big fan of horror books, but Hennessy's books urged to read more horror instead of literary and contemporary! Dark Winter series is such a series if we read the series even after the 100th time, it'll equally scare you out of your guts similar to the first time.

Thanks to 2014, I not only found an incredible author, but also found a friend who will always stand by my side through thick-and-thin. Though distance is the one thing that separates us but our love for books and kindness for each other strengthens our bond of friendship every single passing day. Hence, in 2014, I found a great friend as well as a promising and talented author. Thank you John for being a great friend.

6. The Echoes of Love by Hannah Fielding

It is not every day that you get to read a story that will stay with your forever. Meaning those books which will never lose it's essence from your hearts. Hannah Fielding's dark and mystifying love story set across the magical destinations in Europe- one being Venice, will entrance your mind and soul. This is one of the most alluring stories that I read in 2014. and for that I'm really very grateful to the author, since she was the one who gave me the opportunity to read her incredible novel.

My bookshelf started growing out of control and soon my heart is overwhelmed with the warmth and kindness shown by all those authors who helped me build a palace of books in my own room.

7. The Lives of Other by Neel Mukherjee

This book marks my both personal and professional best moment in my life in the year 2014. Firstly, Neel Mukherjee's publisher gave me an opportunity to read the novel just before the Man Booker Event and secondly Mukherjee's family saga bewitched my heart and felt a new found love for my own city- Kolkata. Maybe Mukherjee's ego never made him read my millions of emails about his book whereas the whole world was screaming against his book, still this book touched my heart in thousands of ways. Moreover, I always adore those people who try to imitate Jhumpa Lahiri's literary style. Hence, I feel myself lucky to get a chance to read Mukherjee's Man Book Longlist nominated book, The Lives of Others.

8. Little Exiles by Robert Dinsdale

I found another equally interesting and wonderful author who's books, I mean Little Exiles and Gingerbread both enthralled my mind with his engaging stories about illegal child immigration in Australia and another about a boy's relationship with his grandfather living in the deep depth of a Siberian forest.

My mind is filled with the idea of starting a book blog. I know it's not anything so new to talk about but for me it is very new and enlightening. Instead I found no courage to start up a blog, all my mind was filled with dejection and negativity and about my lack to keep up with the blog. But on October 2014, I started my very own blog called Book Stop Corner and right now you are reading this very post on my very own blog. I really grateful to those people who supported and encouraged me and for those who are still appreciating the effort that I've put behind this blog. Thank You 2014 and it is one of the best thing that happened to me this year.

9. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Thanks to David Fincher for introducing me with this author. Before 2014 and before all the hype created before Gone Girl movie's release, I never heard of Gillian Flynn. And just before the movie's release, I purchased the book, Gone Girl and watched myself enraptured with Flynn's dark thriller that introduces marriage as the killer. And David Fincher did exact justice to Flynn's gripping novel.Gone Girl changed my perspective about lot of things in life. So thanks to Gillian Flynn for that!

I feel really grateful to all of my followers for being a part of my blog and making it a houseful show. And I can't be enough proud about myself!

10. Dublin in the Rain by Andrew Critchley

2014 introduced me with another promising debut author and I feel myself fortunate enough on finding this author. Critchley's debut novel, Dublin in the Rain makes us think about our inner self and gives birth to a new found passion in our hearts. Andrew Critchley is another friend whose friendship I'll forever cherish. And I feel grateful towards the author for his warmth, support and kindness that he showed for me. Dublin in the Rain falls in the must read criteria and honestly, I never read something so passionate and emotional.

Review # 86: Murderous Little Darlings (A Tale of Vampires #1) by John Hennessy

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

William Francis "Bill" Nighy, an English actor, has quoted about the 'vampires' as:

The phenomenon of vampires have always appealed to me. Everyone kind of likes a vampire story because it almost could be true.

Once again, my very dear friend and my favorite English author, John Hennessy, has come up with a tale about a vampire folklore, in his latest release, Murderous Little Darlings which happens to be the very first book, in yet another thrilling series named, A Tale of Vampires.

Synopsis:
Three siblings. An endless list of victims. A whole lot of time to kill.
With two specimens of the undead on either side of her, Juliana knew there was no escape. Kill the one they had selected for her, or be killed, and become of them. What had the neighbors in the road called them, back when their childhood pranks were just that?
Oh yes, she remembered now. Murderous Little Darlings. They had the faces of angels, but possessed the very soul of the Devil.

Review #61: Dark Winter: Crescent Moon by John Hennessy

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“Fear doesn't shut you down; it wakes you up”
----Veronica Roth, Divergent

John Hennessy, an English YA novelist, has chosen horror/fear genre above all other genre to pen his incredibly spooky trilogy, Dark Winter. In his second book, Dark Winter: Crescent Moon, John has depicted Darwin's theory of evolution, "survival of the fittest and strongest". In The Wicca Circle, we are introduced with Romilly, the protagonist and her inner demons but are left with millions of questions, and in this new book, we get all the answers that we were looking for.

Warning: Be aware! This book is not meant for those with a weak/faint heart!

Synopsis:
Romilly has saved the people of Gorswood from the demons called Zeryths by protecting the Mirror of Souls, but her inner demons are reluctant to leave her alone, and with each passing day, they are growing more stronger, and making her hard to live in peace.

Review #27: Dark Winter: The Wicca Circle by John Hennessy

Dark Winter: The Wicca Circle by John Hennessy

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Arthur William "Art" Bell, an American broadcaster and author, who was one of the founders and the original host of the paranormal-themed radio program, Coast to Coast AM, has once said,

"I do believe in the paranormal, and that there are things our brains just can't understand."

Till date I've read quite a few paranormal genre books, but I never got scared this much. And surprisingly, even though it was fiction, just like Art Bell, I believed the story, that my dear friend and a very talented author, John Hennessy, has crafted out in his new book called, Dark Winter: The Wicca Circle (Dark Winter #1). And remarkably, John has invented a whole new paranormal world, which sounded quite genuine and real to me. I loved every bit of it.

Thank you John for giving me an opportunity to read your book.

The story is not that so unusual or unique, a simple normal teenager, who wakes up one day to find out that she's not normal and that she has a very special power within herself and as well as the mirror that she inherited from her Nan, and as usual we know that with great power comes great responsibility, so she, along with her few close friends, buckle up to save their world from the evil forces, simultaneously, fighting with her inner demons.

Review #26: Stormling by John Hennessy

Stormling by John Hennessy

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Stormling is the first book in the Mordana Chronicles, authored by John Hennessy, who is not only a talented and skilled author but also a dear friend. I got accustomed with his work after reading the remarkable and sinister series called the Dark Winter series. After reading Stormling, I swear that I will have to read whatever this author pens down, who has not only an wide imaginative mind but also has quite exquisite taste of drawing his characters which are equally unique, dark and glorious.

Many thanks to the author, John Hennessy, for giving me this opportunity to read and review his book.

My words fall short for appreciating his ingenuous style of narration and unfolding of the tale in Stormling. No I'm not going to compare with any other author, instead his books made me believe in so many tiny little details of the world, and how to bring out appreciation. His characters open a world which makes the impossible sound possible and make us believe the aura of John's make-believe world. This book is not only long but also demands a lot of attention. And with the burst of myriad of unusual characters, John has not only added the glitter with spunk to his tale but also made it incredibly engaging.
