Review with Giveaway: Mind Over Bullies: A Mob Forms by D.K. Smith

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“One's dignity may be assaulted, vandalized and cruelly mocked, but it can never be taken away unless it is surrendered.”

----Michael J. Fox

D.K. Smith pens his latest novel, Mind Over Bullies: A MOB Forms , that is a coming-of-age story about children getting bullied in high school and how an anti-bully committee is formed who can take drastic measures to teach the bullies a lesson, moreover, there's a money forging case that will keep the readers on their edges.

Synopsis:

Margo is pretty, popular and unsympathetic to just how intense bullying can get. As a counterfeiting plot sweeps through the city of Oak View, life for Margo will change dramatically.

With a mystery unfolding, an unlikely group of heroes emerges. Bullied teens love them, the police hate them and bullies fear them. Together they will try to get to the bottom of the counterfeiting mystery while ingeniously teaching a few bullies a lesson or two along the way… that is, if the police don’t catch them first.

An anti-bullying committee is formed to teach the bullies a lesson by applying strict and harsh means with the help of their latest technology. Then there is a money-forging scandal that involves some of the anti bullying committee and the only connection between the two is a teenager named Margo. Read the book to find out more about this mystery.

The writing style is crisp and clear with a strong and catchy narrative. The prose moves smoothly considering the fact that there involves a suspense revolving around money. The book unravels itself like a mystery plot and has a thorough depth in the story.

The issues addressed in the book are really edgy and coming-of-age, that involves teenagers and bullying and how it is bit by bit eating away the younger minds of our society. The dark reality of bullying and it's essence is very vividly captured by the author in his story. Moreover, there is a money counterfeiting problem that is realistically featured in the story.

The characters are drawn with enough realism, which undergo a lot of character growth all through out the story. The author has strikingly arrested the young voices and their plight in this story. Overall, this is a very interesting book with a twisting plot that will challenge the readers till the very last page.

Verdict: A must read book for every other teenager in this world.

Author's Bio:

A 38 year old native of Los Angeles, Mr. Smith began his writing career after getting news that he would soon become an uncle. Wanting to create stories and characters for his expected niece, he created the children’s book series “Sock n Boots Adventures.” The two characters (three year old Sock and five year old Boots) began to make names for themselves, generating downloads in countries around the world.

When asked about his motivation to tackle the subject of bullying in a 108,000 word novel Smith said, “One day I came across a story in the news about a young girl that jumped in front of a subway train after weeks of bullying. As I investigated further, I was shocked at the number of similar stories I encountered. Bullycide, the news was calling it. I thought, wow, what if these young people had been shown that the pain of bullying can be handled without hurting themselves or someone else.”

Ultimately it was thoughts of his now four nieces and three nephews dealing with bullying as they get older that weighed heavily on the decision for Smith to write the story about bullying. “I recognize that the characters and situations in the book may not represent every bullying situation and that realistically the book won’t change the world, but I do sincerely hope that it sends a subtle message about there being life after bullying. We’ll just have to see how the public receives it,” Smith said.

A lover of mystery and espionage stories, Smith is a fan of everything James Bond. A favorite scenario is to see a character in an impossible situation get out of it at the last second or have the odds against them and see he or she turn the tables. Acting on the love of espionage and mystery, Smith has a new novel in the works centering on a James Bond-type character of his own creation.

Author Interview:

Me: What do you want readers to know about you?

D.K:
I love storytelling. I am an average guy, but creating things is my passion, and not just creating in the form of writing. I love to cook too. I make a great enchilada and I do okay with cookies. Peanut butter, chocolate chip and oatmeal are my favorite types of cookies to bake.

Me: Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

D.K:
In a word, life. I am always watching the world as I go about my day. I hear interesting conversations and see interesting real life events take place and every now and then something sparks my interest. Of course I have to add some color to what I see or hear to make it a good fictional tale, but life never fails to provide good ideas.

Me: What do you think makes a good story?

D.K:
I think a good story takes a reader through a range of emotions, maybe not every emotion, but at least three or four. If you take a reader through the full range of emotions, in my opinion you are on your way to a best-seller.

Me: What are you working on at the minute?

D.K:
Actually I have three projects in the works. The next book will release in December of this year or early in January 2016. It’s a reality sci-fi thriller. Think Inception mixed with Back to the future. It’s called “Actuality.”

Then there is a spy novel that will probably release late next year. And of course, the Mind Over Bullies sequel is in the works.

Me: Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character in the spy novel?

D.K:
Idris Alba. Can’t really picture anyone else. Lol.

Me: Any advice for other writers?
D.K:
Write often. Practice telling stories. Be realistic, but don’t limit your creativity. Don’t write what you think people want to read, write what touches you, and more than likely you will touch someone else.
