Review #118: In the Summer Time by Judy Astley

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

While reading In the Summer Time by Judy Astley, my mind was crooning Kesha's one of the most heart-breaking songs:

But old flames can't hold a candle to you
Sometimes at night, I think of old lovers I've known
I remember how holding them helped me not feel so alone
Then I feel you beside me and even their memories are gone
Like stars in the night lost in the sweet light of dawn
Old flames can't hold a candle to you
No one can light up the night like you do
Flickering embers of love
I've known one or two
But old flames can't hold a candle to you
Old flames can't hold a candle to you

Review #117: The Disease by George Hamilton

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

"And it will fall out as in a complication of diseases, that by applying a remedy to one sore, you will provoke another and that which removes the one ill symptom produces others."

----Sir Thomas More, an English lawyer, social philosopher, author, statesman and noted Renaissance humanist

George Hamilton, the English author, bewitched our mind with his engaging and intriguing book, The Disease, that takes us on trip behind the world of doctors and politics- all trying to fight against one rare disease in their own way.

Author Q&A Session #16: With Joanna Bolouri

Hello and welcome,
Today I present you one of the most fabulous authors,

Me: Hello and welcome to my blog, Joanna. Congratulations on your debut book, The List. Can you please tell us briefly about the story behind, The List?

Joanna: The List follows a year in the life of Phoebe Henderson who decides to reinvent herself by making a list of ten things she's always wanted to do in bed - a bucket list for between the sheets, in an attempt to get her ex boyfriend Alex out of her system once and for all.

Me: What was the inspiration behind such a hilariously engaging story, The List? And was it based on any real people from your life?
Joanna: The idea came about after a conversation with some friends. I think most writers draw inspiration from real life but sadly the majority of this is fiction!

Me: Can you tell us one trait of Phoebe Henderson that intrigue you the most?
Joanna: I like her sense of humor, probably because it's very close to mine.

Me: What is your take on friends with no strings attached kind of relationship? Do you feel in this modern 21st century, men and women are opting out more for a "friends with no benefits" kind of relationship before committing themselves with their soul mates?
Joanna: Definitely, although I don't always think it works. I think one person is always hoping for something more - it's human nature.

Me: This is a dare question totally! What was your source of research for this witty and sexy novel? Say something other than 50 Shades of Grey!
Joanna: I haven't actually read 50 shades of Grey! Research came from websites, conversations, experience and a very vivid imagination!

Me: Describe your journey so far as an author? And was it always your one true dream to be a writer? And name any one writer who's books impacted you a lot in your childhood?

Joanna: Stephen King is my favorite author. He definitely inspired me to write, as do most authors I read! I think a good author will inspire me to try harder. My journey so far has been surreal! I went from hoping someone would read my first novel to being published in 12 countries.

Me: Since you're a single mother, so is it difficult for you to juggle both your writing hats as well as motherhood?

Joanna: It was initially. When my daughter was small I looked after her during the day and wrote at night. Now that she's older, I can work while she's in school (and at night) - the thing I find hardest to juggle is a social life - I don't get much free time.

Me: And how do you get away from all those writing stress and daily stress?

Joanna: I sleep! I listen to music, I read, I watch horror films with my best friend and I try to see my friends as much as I can.

Me: What's next up on your writing sleeves? Please tell us briefly about it.

Joanna: My second novel, I Followed the Rules is out in 2015. It's about a writer who's tasked to follow an infamous dating guide for her weekly column, forcing her to rethink everything she thought she knew about romance and dating.

Me: Thank you Joanna for sparing time to have this interview with me for my blog. I can only wish you luck in all your future endeavors. Keep writing those fabulous books!
Joanna: Thank you for having me!

Bye Bye Winter, Say Hi to Random Monsoon!

Current Weather Stats in Kolkata, India: 25 degree Celsius, i.e. 77
degree Fahrenheit, along with heavy rainfall and wind.

Surprised? Shocked?
Yeah, it was shocker for me too, when the weather
started to go up drastically and especially when it started to rain.
The clouds simply cocooned us from the chill and the wintery breeze.
People in my city are equally surprised with this sudden change of weather! However, don't worry, I'm not going to bore you guys with my knowledge of Global
Warming effects!

Random Rain!

 What am I doing now?
But in such a weather, what can a person do? You cannot go
out for winter picnics or chill out in the winter sun. The only option is to stay
indoors and to enjoy the rain and the summer breeze from the very
comfort of your room. But I still managed to go out in the morning to
catch an early morning show of a local (Bengali-native) film called, "Ebar Shabor"- a
detective/mystery film based on the novel, Rwin by Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay, a popular Bengali writer. I really loved it, it was
thoroughly engaging and interesting.

Ebar Shabor

Why am I writing this random post about some random rain?
Well, the
first reason would be that I love the rains. Monsoon is my favorite season!
And since rain decided to surprise us all in the winter, I'm going to
treat it like any other normal rainy day. Yes, with books and gallons of
tea!

Best Combination- Tea and Books!

What am I reading now?
"In the Summer Time" by Judy Astley. The book's
all about golden beach, old flame, holiday with mom, girls night out,
barbecue, salty breeze and an English summer. No it doesn't sound
any cliche! I thought it will be good to read a summer book in the
winter in order to make myself nostalgic- that longing feeling in the
pit of my stomach for the summer to come and swoon me with it's
heat and breeze. Unfortunately, now it so feels like summer in here!
Literally, I'm eating an ice-cream as I write this post!

A Beach Read!

Why don't I try some poetry in this beautiful weather?
I never wrote any sort of poem in my whole life. But they say, whenever it rains, it brings out all the best emotions of a human being. Rain can give words to our feelings! So I too tried some poetry, although, it's very bad, like some kid writing a bad poetry, still the words are worth my feelings!

Pitter patter on my window,
O Rain, here you are,
drumming against the canopy with your echo
Drip-drop on the cold hard ground
O Rain, here you are,
wetting the leaves that were browned
Tick-tock as the clock chimes
O Rain, here you are,
making me wonder what do in my pastimes

Some Poetry!

It's Sunday!
So apart from reading books, here I'm blogging about my lazy & rainy
Sunday! They say, Sunday is the day to refuel and re-energize your
soul, but what I think is that it is the day which reminds us about
our week that we spent, how we spent, analyzing the positive and
negative and how we can do better in the upcoming week!
There's a nice saying about Sunday:
A Sunday well spent brings a week
of content!

What are the ways to beat the boredom on a rainy Sunday morning?
Anyhow, I'm not here to write about Sunday, I'm here to say some of my
favorite "rainy" stuffs: (I bet you'll agree with me!)

Books,
Tea,
Blankets,
Sitting by the window,
Watching the rain,
Sniffing the smell of rain in the wind,
Singing along with the wind,
Feeling gloomy while watching the grey sky.

Favorite things!

My List!
Well that's my list of stuffs which I absolutely love to do on a random or on
any regular rainy day! But now I want to add another option on to my
list and that is: blogging. With the pitter patter of the rain, my typing sound on a
laptop keyboard is absolutely rhyming.

Blogging

In a nutshell
Rainy smell, bookish smell and the smell of hot tea-
all three mixed up together, thereby creating a beautiful fragrance in
the air and the sounds created by the rain and by my keyboard are
reverberating the whole stillness of a Sunday morning.

Enjoying the Winter Rain

So that's all for today, see you on my next blog-post,
Happy Reading!

Review #116: Burning Embers by Hannah Fielding

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In Kenya you've got the great birds and monkeys leaping through the trees overhead. It's a chance to remember what the world is really like.
----Joanna Lumley, an English actress, voice-over artist, former model and author

Hannah Fielding, a French writer, enchanted my mind and heart, with her debut novel, Burning Embers which is set across the lush green and golden landscape of Kenya.

Synopsis:
Coral Sinclair is a beautiful but naive twenty-five-year-old photographer who has just lost her father. She's leaving the life she's known and traveling to Kenya to take ownership of her inheritance--the plantation that was her childhood home--Mpingo. On the voyage from England, Coral meets an enigmatic stranger to whom she has a mystifying attraction. She sees him again days later on the beach near Mpingo, but Coral's childhood nanny tells her the man is not to be trusted. It is rumored that Rafe de Monfort, owner of a neighboring plantation and a nightclub, is a notorious womanizer having an affair with her stepmother, which may have contributed to her father's death.
Circumstance confirms Coral's worst suspicions, but when Rafe's life is in danger she is driven to make peace. A tentative romance blossoms amidst a meddling ex-fiancé, a jealous stepmother, a car accident, and the dangerous wilderness of Africa. Is Rafe just toying with a young woman's affections? Is the notorious womanizer only after Coral's inheritance? Or does Rafe's troubled past color his every move, making him more vulnerable than Coral could ever imagine?

I was lucky enough to read Fielding's latest novel, The Echoes of Love , before reading her debut, Burning Embers , and her latest is equally enthralling like her first book. In the first book, she paints the picture of a passionate and heart-touching love story set across the backdrop of African beauty, back in an era when Africa was a gold-digger's land.

Coral is a young English woman, who is also a passionate photographer, whereas Rafe is an old and cunning businessman, who happens to be a womanizer. And the author crafted them like some divine, rare and exotic species of the human race. The author flawlessly portrayed their perfect beauty and their inevitable attraction for each other. And yes, in a way, while I was reading about them, I felt passion in my mind and body. The story started with Coral's arrival in her father's estate in Kenya, and on her journey from England to Kenya, she met a handsome, tall and dark stranger who made her fall in love in the very first sight. However, upon her arrival, her old care-taker filled her heart with hatred for that mysterious man. The more she tried to stop thinking about Rafe, the more he became close to her own heart, and with each passing day, their attraction increased for each other, despite the rumors about Rafe's identity. And my friends, you need to read the rest of the story, to know how Coral gets adjusted with her heart and mind's tug-of-war.

The author created her characters strikingly, like every individual has something power in their demeanor to capture your attention as you read on.
But what kept me glued till the end was the author's writing! Her writing is something so exquisite and smooth that it pulls the strings of your heart into the core of the story. I moved along with her story, with the emotions, and with the nature! Africa welcomed me with it's open arms and I was completely lost into the African aura that the author created simply with words.

Not only the author captured the beauty and the golden soil of Kenya vividly into her story, but also she showed me the unexplored side of Africa- the tribes, the language, the food, the exotic and uninhibited culture, and oh-so-gorgeous African safari. It is not every day that you come across a tale- a simple tale, I must say, that enraptures your soul, mind and body with it's beauty.

Yes, to be honest, the love story is not any extraordinary tale that will bring out all the emotions out of you, but the way the author represented it, it'll bind to bring out every form of emotions out of your heart, but the exoticness of the whole story will absolutely intrigue you, amaze you and will keep you on your edges. Apart from that their is a mystery, that too keeps you turning the pages of the book and the author unfolded that mystery piece-by-piece. Moreover, there's a lesson in the end that enlightens our mind that how not to trust the word of mouth and to believe in what's in their heart.

Verdict: Read this book to feel the beauty of Kenya and to feel the passion of an captivating love-story.

Author Info:
Hannah Fielding is a novelist, a dreamer, a traveler, a mother, a wife and an incurable romantic. The seeds for her writing career were sown in early childhood, spent in Egypt, when she came to an agreement with her governess Zula: for each fairy story Zula told, Hannah would invent and relate one of her own. Years later – following a degree in French literature, several years of traveling in Europe, falling in love with an Englishman, the arrival of two beautiful children and a career in property development – Hannah decided after so many years of yearning to write that the time was now. Today, she lives the dream: she writes full time, splitting her time between her homes in Kent, England, and the South of France, where she dreams up romances overlooking breathtaking views of the Mediterranean.
Her first novel, Burning Embers, is a vivid, evocative love story set against the backdrop of tempestuous and wild Kenya of the 1970s, reviewed by one newspaper as ‘romance like Hollywood used to make’. Her new novel, The Echoes of Love, is a story of passion, betrayal and intrigue set in the romantic and mysterious city of Venice and the beautiful landscape of Tuscany.

It's Time to Make a New Year Resolution List!

Happiee New Year to all my followers as well as to all my friends and fellow bloggers out there!

I know, it's been already a day and I still have not wished you guys. Maybe, I should be more responsible about my blogging in 2015. Ahhaa, sounds like a New Year's Resolution!! Yes, my friends, on this very blog post, I'm going to resolute about certain things that I'd like to follow on 2015. Since, it's again that time of the year, when we firmly make our minds resolute to certain do's and dont's that we will adhere to! So without any negative thoughts, I'd like to share away my list of resolution with you all.

Resolution#1: I 'will' clear out my to-be read shelf by the first quarter of 2015 and 'will' make a new to-be read shelf

Yes, I still have 87 books to read and I must clear out those books and fill with all the new and upcoming books by March. I know it sounds very tough, but my aim will be to finish off reading those 87 books. So with a confident mind, I'd like to promise myself to read 87 books by March.

Resolution#2: I 'will' shop less and save more money

Yeah, I confess that I've a shopping problem.. I mean I'm a shopaholic and I don't expect you guys to say that "Aditi, We are here with you" just like in the movie called, "Confessions of a Shopaholic" No, it's not that bad, but it's also not that good! Instead, I'll learn to maintain the records of all my accounts, in fact, I will open Fixed Deposit accounts and Recurring Deposits accounts in my bank to reach my goal. I have to learn to shop sensitively. So I take a solemn pledge to save 1578.99 $, i.e. 1 lakh rupees by the end of this year.

Resolution#3: I 'must' tone down my abs/stomach

Firmly, I swear that I'll use my old and dusty treadmill to at least tone down a bit, not too much toning, but at least by some inches. And I 'will' wake up in the early morning to follow my aim and 'will' also follow a healthy diet. I'm seriously not kidding! I want to be successful at least on this particular resolution of mine.

Resolution#4: I 'will' blog more

My blog's only 2 months old and I'm already drifting apart from it with each passing day, especially, I've no clue about the blog on the occasions like Christmas, Durga Puja or any holiday. And I swear that I'll write more about funny and quirky stuffs, and will constantly drive myself to grow my blog's traffic/readers/followers. Hence, my pledge will be to a successful blogger.

Resolution#5: I 'will' try to be a more better person

Yeah, I guess everyone has this on their resolution list to be more caring, responsible, loving etc.. And just like those people, I too want to solemnly pledge myself to be a better human being and if possible will commit myself to the betterment of this planet. Or at least I will try to be a better daughter and a better friend in the year 2015. And my only motto will be: "Laugh More and Worry Less!"

Resolution#6: I 'will' say NO to a lot of stuff in my life

First, I'll say a big NO to my old life. I will now adopt other habits and passions. I will say 'NO' to all the negative things in my life and to all the negative people in my life. I will even befriend some of my I-don't-know-who-the-hell-he/she-is Facebook friend; it is another way of saying 'NO'. And I will also say 'NO' to my old habits like sulking. I will 'NOT' whine about certain unfortunate situations and will 'NOT' feel jealous/complex about stuffs, people, animals etc. So in a way, I'll start trusting myself more and more in the year 2015.

Resolution#7: This is my last pledge: I 'will' travel to somewhere nice and exotic

It's time to get away from my old and boring city life to somewhere new and exotic. It can be a family trip or a self-trip and for that purpose, I need to save more money instead of buying stupid and random stuffs. It's high time that I start traveling and experience the world with my own eyes.

So, my friends, I'd like to sign off on a positive note and will not think even for a second that I won't be able to keep up with my resolution list, instead, just like Adidas and Nike brands tagline, I'll say to myself: "Nothing is Impossible" and "Yes, I Can".

See you on my next blog post!
Until then,
Happy Reading!

Review #115: Secrets from the Dust by George Hamilton

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Who doesn't know about that period of history in Australia when the government removed the Aboriginal children from their parents forcefully assimilated to work in the homes of white people as servants. We call it as Stolen Generation.
And I found a real nice poem about a child screaming for her real parents and for her identity.

Review #114: A Special Delivery by Clare Dowling

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

"Families are like fudge - mostly sweet with a few nuts."

Someone might have said a million dollar thing without taking any full credit. Clare Dowling, an Irish writer, charmed us with an incredible story that brilliantly features a disoriented family in the light of Christmas and New Year's eve, in her new book, A Special Delivery .

Synopsis:

As their world is turned upside down, questions have to be asked. But are the Bradys ready to face the truth about themselves? And what each of them has done?
